Important Letter to GAHS Students and Families

Important Information

GAHS Students and Families,

I hope this letter finds you doing well during these uncertain times.  Please know you are missed by your high school family.  We all desire to safely return to school as soon as possible.  Until we do, I truly believe that these challenging times will only make us stronger.  The key is continuing to work together.

On Wednesday, March 25, you received a continuity of education plan from Dr. Trail.  I will highlight the key areas pertaining to the high school program and provide a few additional details.

Our goal is to have all courses that were running second semester continue virtually.  This includes instruction and grading so students can earn credit toward graduation.  Although we are currently scheduled to physically return to school on April 13, to be adequately prepared to meet the needs of our students, we must approach this with a possibility the closure could continue longer.  Here are the next steps:

  • Visit the district’s website, and click on the Students tab at the top of the page.  Then click on Student Technology.  Here you will find an extensive list of valuable educational resources which your child can now engage.

  • Monday, March 30 – Friday, April 2:  Our teachers will receive professional development and will be moving their course materials to Schoology, an online platform.

  • All courses will be posted to Schoology by Monday, April 6 at 9:00am.

  • Beginning Monday, April 6 students should plan to set aside an average of one hour a day per one-credit course they are enrolled in this semester.  Coursework will be provided four days per week through Schoology.  Students will be expected to complete daily coursework.  Fridays will be considered a make-up day for any missed assignments during the week and can also be used to further engage in the enrichment sites on the district’s website.

  • It is very important that students stay in close communication with their teachers during these times. Follow the instructions provided by your teachers and ask questions if you are unsure of something.

  • I am confident our teachers will provide meaningful activities for our students and will bring the same passion and dedication to online education as they do in the classroom. We know this is not a perfect plan, but we are making a good faith effort to keep our students moving forward educationally during these times.

  • I am confident our students will step up to the challenge of online learning and give their best effort each day to make this new method of education work until we are back in the classroom again.

  • I truly believe we serve wonderful students and families.  We all need to continue working together to make this situation the best we can for our students.  Even though we are unable to be physically together, it is more critical than ever to be flexible and to take care of each other during these times.

  • Advanced Placement Courses – we have been working closely with the College Board and HCC throughout the closure.  AP teachers began reaching out to their students March 26 and 27.  Here is a link to the changes made by College Board:

  • Community Service - The GAHS Social Studies Department has modified the community service requirement for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year to best accommodate our students. The department recognizes that many host sites where our students began earning their service hours are now closed due to social isolation policies.  Please read the Community Service Modification Announcement on the High School Webpage under the Students tab.   • College Advisor – Mr. Hoon sent out a letter today through School Messenger to Juniors and Seniors.  If you need assistance from Mr. Hoon during this closure, please feel free to reach out to him at

  • Regarding questions about future planned events such as NHS Induction, Prom, and Graduation activities; our goal is to continue to provide these opportunities for our students as scheduled.  Unfortunately, this may change based on future recommendations from the Governor, Department of Education and the Department of Health. We will continue to keep families and students informed as information becomes available.

  • Earlier this week we sent an announcement from the Yearbook Staff about our “Social Distancing Spirit Week” which will take place March 30 – April 3.  Students, I encourage you to participate and show your school spirit during this unique opportunity.

I hope this begins to clarify where we are headed as a school district.  I will continue to communicate with you throughout this process – but I am sure that is enough for now.  I know this is an anxious time for many, so please continue to take care of each other.  This is a challenge that none of us expected – but I am confident we will rise up and get through these times together.  We are G-A PROUD!
